Dealing with water damage

Updated on November 2, 2026

In the event of water damage, your insurer is your first point of contact. You must report your claim to them and have it assessed by your caretaker.

You should also be aware that until the cause of the damage has been identified and eliminated, the claim cannot be processed.

Your caretaker can help you find the cause of the damage. Depending on the situation, Paris Habitat may cover the cost of eliminating the cause of the damage (e.g. repairing a leak in a pipe).

Dealing with water damage (compensation, carrying out repairs) can be lengthy and complicated because of the number of parties involved (tenant, landlord, neighbour, insurers and their respective experts).

You must allow the various parties involved (experts, contractors, etc.) access to your home.

Finally, if you fail to carry out the work related to the water damage that is your responsibility, you may be charged for it when you move out.
